Skin Tone Chart Explained — Colours by Sue, Perth

Most skin tone charts focus on depth — fair to deep. The undertone axis is the missing piece that explains why two same-depth women suit completely different colours.

Depth axis — fair to deep

Fair, light, medium, tan, deep, very deep — six bands most brands recognise.

Undertone axis — warm, cool, neutral

Cross every depth with one of three undertones for an 18-cell matrix. Both axes matter for foundation matching; for clothing, undertone matters more.

Why the chart isn't the whole story

Charts can't see your contrast level, eye colour or sub-season. Use them as a starting point, not a final answer.

Frequently asked questions

Are skin tone charts accurate for foundation?

For depth, yes. For undertone, only if you've correctly identified yours first.

Where can I see a printed chart in Perth?

Most MAC and Mecca counters have them. We use our own draping chart during sessions.
