What worked at 35 doesn't work at 55. Here's how to update a tired routine without overhauling your whole makeup bag.

Why old routines stop working

Skin loses elasticity, fine lines deepen, lips lose definition and brow density drops. Powdery, matte, heavy products that worked in your 30s now settle into texture and emphasise it.

The mature-skin base routine

  • Hydrating serum before primer
  • Sheer-to-medium liquid foundation (avoid full-coverage powder)
  • Cream blush over powder
  • Setting spray instead of setting powder
  • Light highlight on cheekbones, never the brow bone

Lifting the eyes

Soft taupe or warm brown in the outer crease, gently winged. Tightline the upper waterline instead of a heavy liner. Curl lashes and use a tubing mascara to avoid smudging.

Lip definition without harshness

Line just outside the natural border with a soft neutral pencil, then fill with a satin lipstick in your seasonal palette. Skip the high-gloss — it bleeds into fine lines.

Frequently asked questions

Should mature skin avoid shimmer?

Not entirely — micro-shimmer (not glitter) on cheekbones still looks beautiful. Avoid shimmer on the eyelid crease and upper cheek.

Do I need different makeup for mature skin or just better technique?

Mostly technique, plus swapping powders for creams and matte bases for satin finishes.
